yap

Delete your Yap account

Two ways, and what happens either way.

In the app — immediate

  1. Open Yap and go to the You tab.
  2. Tap Delete account, then Delete everything.

It happens straight away and you're signed out.

Without the app — by email

Email harivishnu20258@gmail.com from the email address you sign in to Yap with, with the subject “Delete my Yap account”. We'll delete it and reply to confirm. A request from any other address can't be acted on — that's what stops someone deleting your account for you.

What's deleted

  • Your account and your sign-in
  • Your answers and your messages
  • Your name, your profile picture, and any selfie still waiting for review
  • Your notification address, if you turned notifications on
  • Your usage events

What's kept for 180 days

Indian law (the IT Rules, 2021) requires two things to be kept for 180 days after an account is deleted, and then they're deleted too:

  • The email address and date of birth you signed up with
  • Any conversation you were in that somebody reported, and the report — kept longer only if it has been reported to the authorities

Only the operator can see them, and only to deal with a report or a lawful order.

What happens to your conversations

Any conversation you were in ends for the other person, the same way it would if you'd left — nobody is told why. What they wrote stays theirs; what you wrote is gone.

Backups

We keep encrypted daily backups of the database to recover from a failure. A copy of your data can remain in those backups after you delete your account. They're private, encrypted, and used for nothing but restoring the service.
